As any dancer will tell you, keeping brushed up on your technique is one of the most important variables of dance and missing class can hinder any consistent improvement. Well, living in the beautiful sunshine state and also being so close to the beach can challenge anyone who loves the outdoors to resist the urge of skipping class every now and then. When contemplating this predicament a voice of reason always comes to mind, my friend, Winter. She always replies simply with, "It's your dance life". Clarity appears and it makes sense again why I do what I do. Even on the most glorious of days I (97.348345% of the time) will choose the hot, muggy, crowded dance studio that I see at least 5 days a week. Even if it is a love/hate relationship I feel that day, at least I'm present. Sometimes physically only, but showing up is probably the most important thing. Showing up gets you recognized, it allows your muscles to achieve what they want over long-term repetitiveness, and more importantly reconnects you with yourself and why you chose this lifestyle. I can't remember when it happened exactly, but there was a point in my life where dance wasn't just something I did or something I had a somewhat talent in, it became something that I couldn't fathom living without, a point where if you accepted me as a part of your life (in any capacity) you accepted dance and everything that came with it.
While at JU, I've learned the value of keeping a journal. Whether it's on my choreographic ideas, the progression of my technique, or my life in general it's always served me positively. Up until now though I've never connected all three aspects of life. The main of purpose of putting this online though is to exchange ideas when it comes to dance (mostly). I would love to have conversations about different aspects of dance that I think about on constant basis. Hopefully a few people will follow just to get conversations going.
